Falling in love makes life complicated. But can falling in love itself be complicated. “Yes”, says Gautham Vasudev Menon in this Simbhu – Trisha starrer film. It’s all about love at first sight between Karthik (Silambarasan), a mechanical engineer with dreams to become a film maker and Jessie (Trisha), a Malayali Christian program analyst and the obstacles they face due to Jessie’s complex and confused character. Both the characters reflect the confused nature of today’s youngsters and the abrupt way in which they take decisions.
Simbhu handles the role of a youngster, with big dreams and irresistibly caught up in love, with élan. This film has definitely broken the stereotype and has brought out the performer in him. The confused young girl Jessie’s character seems like it had been tailor-made for Trisha. She definitely scores gracefully and with applause.
The first half of the film is feel good and pleasant with an unexpected twist just before the intermission. But the initial scenes of the second half, where the narration should have been racy, slow down greatly and fail to impress. At one point, I couldn’t help thinking whether the director has given the lead pair, a photocopy of their previous dialogues!
The cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa deserves a special mention. The soft romance between the protagonists and the beauty of the locations are evident in each frame. The chart busting songs by A.R.Rahman are aptly placed and the director has definitely done justice to them.
The ‘straight from the heart and true to your mind’ storyline and the outstanding performance by the actors make it worth watching. Even with a few flaws like repeated dialogues and déjà vu scenes, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa is bound to cross the skies.
